Floating Liberals: Female Politicians, Progressive Politics, and PSI in the 2019 Indonesian Election

This article analyses an experiment in liberal-progressive politics that occurred Indonesia 2019. A new party, the Partai Solidaritas (PSI, Indonesian Solidarity Party), supported gender equality as part of a broad liberal programme. PSI foregrounded female candidates and focused on issues, including controversial topics such opposition to polygamy. Reflecting party campaign strategies media exposure, rather than grassroot mobilisation, garnered support mostly from educated urban voters.
